Product details description
Fiberglass mesh is a key material for reinforcing plaster and stucco walls and preventing cracks caused by shrinkage, thermal movement, or structural shifts. The first selection criterion is mesh weight and density, measured in grams per square meter (gsm). Lightweight meshes (75–110 gsm) suit interior drywall reinforcement, while medium (130–160 gsm) and heavy-duty (160+ gsm) meshes are used for exterior applications and areas prone to high stress, such as wall corners, window/door perimeters, and foundation joints.
Mesh weave type affects performance. Standard alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh has a leno weave that resists tearing and distortion during application. Some products feature a flattened or textured surface to improve adhesion with mortar or render, reducing the risk of delamination. The alkali-resistant coating is critical: it protects the glass fibers from degradation in alkaline environments (e.g., cement-based renders), ensuring long-term strength and crack control.
Openings size (mesh count) determines flexibility and coverage. Fine mesh (4x4 mm or 5x5 mm openings) offers higher crack bridging but may be harder to embed evenly. Larger openings (e.g., 10x10 mm) are more flexible and easier to apply on uneven substrates but provide less crack control. Choose finer mesh for high-movement joints and coarse mesh for general reinforcement. Compatibility with finish materials matters too—some specialty plasters require specific mesh coatings to bond properly.
Environmental and application conditions guide selection. In coastal or high-humidity regions, opt for mesh with enhanced corrosion resistance and high alkali resistance. For seismic zones, use heavy-duty mesh with high tensile strength to accommodate building movement. Proper embedding—fully encasing the mesh in a base coat without air gaps—maximizes effectiveness. Selecting the right fiberglass mesh ensures durable, crack-resistant walls that maintain appearance and structural integrity over time.
